Technical, Legislative, and Human Interest
Seminars

Since DNA testing procedures were first applied in criminal
casework in the late 1980's, DNA has been used to generate
a National convicted offender database of more than
2,700,000 individuals, and has been used in more than
1,000,000 criminal investigations worldwide.  The combined
approach of processing no-suspect casework and
conducting database searches has produced more than
2
0,000 "cold hits" in the U.S. alone.

Our principle consultant, Dr. Mitchell Holland, has been a
part of this evolution.  He has helped to advance many of the
methods and techniques used in forensic casework today,
and has transferred his knowledge to crime laboratories
around the world.  In addition, the laboratories he directed
have applied DNA testing procedures to generate more than
450,000 offender profiles and process more than 15,000
forensic cases.  Given his vast
experience with all types of
DNA testing procedures (STR and Y-STR typing kits, and
mtDNA sequencing) on a variety of instruments (Applied
Biosystems 377, 310, and 3100, and the Hitachi FMBIO II),
Dr. Holland can tailor his lectures towards relevant
issues specific to the DNA work being performed in
your local jurisdiction.

    TOPICS:
    DNA Collection and Preservation Techniques
    Types of DNA Analysis
    DNA Analysis Methods
    Interpretation of DNA Results
    Admissibility Hearings
Preparation of DNA Evidence for Trial
    Challenges
New Technologies and Techniques on the Horizon

In addition to technical lectures, we can provide talks on
legislative and human interest topics.
Debbie & Rob Smith
have been leading advocates for the use of DNA testing.
Debbie was a victim of rape and Rob is a retired police officer
from Williamsburg, Virginia, who found his wife following her
horrible encounter with a violent criminal.  As a result of this
experience, their perspective is quite unique.  How does
someone from the law enforcement community deal with the
realization that his wife has been raped?  How does the wife
that was raped deal with the fact that her husband was not
able to help her or find the criminal?   How did they cope, and
what have they done to put back the pieces and use their
experience to help others and facilitate the passage of
important legislation?
